Lund and Henderson awarded new grant to apply causal inference methods to improve estimation of the real-world net benefits of lung cancer screening

May 15, 2024

Drs. Jennifer Lund and Louise Henderson were awarded a new grant to apply causal inference methods to improve estimation of the real-world net benefits of lung cancer screening (LCS). Previous studies have demonstrated that lung cancer screening using LDCT can reduce lung cancer mortality, but this comes with the cost of relatively high rates of false positive results and complications from downstream procedures. However, we also see that behaviors of patients who screen in the “real world” are different from those in randomized clinical trials (RCTs), specifically that only around 10-20% of eligible individuals actually undergo LCS, and of those, … Read more

Dr. Henderson discusses lung cancer screening guidelines at CHEST 2022 Conference

October 19, 2022

“Some have raised concerns that the 2013 USPSTF lung cancer screening eligibility criteria created racial and ethnic disparities,” Dr. Henderson said. “And while expanded eligibility criteria are an important step to equity, it’s not enough to eliminate disparities. We must address disparities and implementation challenges to get lung cancer screening to areas in need.” Read the Full Article at: Experts share latest updates in lung cancer screening guidelines

USPSTF Lung Cancer Screening Recommendations Updated March 9, 2021

March 10, 2021

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) updated their Recommendation Summary for Lung Cancer Screening on March 9, 2021. “The USPSTF recommends annual screening for lung cancer with low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) in adults aged 50 to 80 years who have a 20 pack-year smoking history and currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years. Screening should be discontinued once a person has not smoked for 15 years or develops a health problem that substantially limits life expectancy or the ability or willingness to have curative lung surgery.” https://www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce.org/uspstf/recommendation/lung-cancer-screening Note: Recommendations made by the USPSTF are independent of … Read more
